NEED MORE DATA?

Myth #5: "Clayton is unique. We have an open campus. We need more time to collect our own Clayton-specific data."

Clayton students are not immune from global health crises or widespread societal trends.
Clayton's open campus is not unique. Most high schools have open campus policies.
2,500 schools have figured out Yondr pouch & phone locker logistics, so can Clayton.

We have plenty of data.
Governments & schools across our world, country, state, & city have been responding to that data for years.

We can change awful societal trends, but only if we do them together at the same time. The phone addiction trend is truly awful. Most adults feel the addiction too. We cannot treat Clayton students like adults on an issue that adults have not figured out how to model responsibly on a widespread level yet. Culture shifts take TIME.

Why we can't wait for culture shift...

Federal law did not ban smoking in schools until 40 years after researchers proved smoking causes cancer. And the cultural shift did not happen until decades thereafter.

Some students, parents, and teachers protested the restrictive laws and bans.

*These are not direct quotes from a historical source. Some are written on signs, others are arguments that our elders remember hearing at the time. We put these quotes here to highlight the fact that responsible adults would not use these arguments to allow smoking in schools today, but some adults are using these arguments to allow something that is, arguably, just as or more damaging to our children's health.
We’re asking the School District of Clayton.. please don’t wait for more data, more reports, more laws, more campaigns, more eating disorders, more depression, more suicides, more anything... to do what you can do about our global phone addiction crisis.

Waiting only inhibits the movement toward healthier, smarter children... a healthier, smarter world. You have the responsibility to enact real solutions that create real outcomes... and you have the power to do it NOW.
