The National School Safety & Security Services explains that access to phones during a school emergency make students less safe because...
#1- PHONES DISTRACT: “Without a doubt, the cellphones provide an emotional security blanket for parents and kids. . . but having that feeling of security comes with safety risks. Using phones can distract people from the actions they need to be taking in the moment, such as running, hiding and listening to directions from first responders.”
#2- PHONES REVEAL: “A phone can make unwanted noises, and in a silent lockdown, even a vibration could be too loud. Furthermore, when students post photos & videos to social media, this could both reveal details about their location to the gunmen and inspire other potential gunmen seeking fame.”
#3- PHONES OVERLOAD: “Victims and worried family members trying to get through can jam communications, interfering with first responders. Even the ability to call 911 isn’t a good reason, because an entire school full of people using their phones at once could overload the 911 switchboard.”
